The Dragonfly Festival Continues
Posted by Vonda on July 20, 2020
More dragonflies today at the pond and creek - some of the same seen on Saturday and some new ones to share. They sure do love a sunny day. This time, I had the telephoto lens to capture the dragonflies perched further away.
New Species Sightings
Ruby Meadowhawk
This male Ruby Meadowhawk was perched on a leaf on the other side of the pond. There are several Meadowhawks that look similar, but key to identifying this species are the black legs and the tan face.
Jade Clubtail
This male Jade Clubtail was spotted sunning on a branch rising just above the pond's surface. The very red, rusty colored clubtail is key to identifying this species. The green eyes are also a good indicator that this is indeed a Jade Clubtail.
The Regulars
Eastern Pondhawk Male
There were many Eastern Pondhawks both at the creek and at the pond, and some even perched for photos.
Immature Male Eastern Pondhawk
Likely the same individual that was seen on Saturday was back visiting his favorite perching spot over the creek.
Twelve-spotted Skimmer
The Twelve-spotted Skimmers were also out in force, patrolling up and down the creek.
